Ontario Kicks Off Construction of Highway 413

The Ontario government has officially launched the first phase of construction for Highway 413, a major infrastructure project designed to ease traffic congestion in the Greater Toronto Area. The highway will connect York, Peel, and Halton regions, cutting commute times by as much as 30 minutes per trip.

Over the course of construction, the project is expected to sustain more than 6,000 jobs annually and add more than $1 billion to Ontario’s economy each year.

Premier Doug Ford highlighted the project’s importance, noting that Highway 413 is a cornerstone of the province’s efforts to keep people and goods moving efficiently:

“Highway 413 is central to our plan to reduce gridlock in Ontario. By moving quickly to award contracts and break ground, we’re ensuring that major infrastructure projects create jobs and strengthen the economy.”

Initial work has begun in Caledon, including resurfacing Highway 10 and preparing for a new bridge that will span the future Highway 413. At the same time, crews are set to upgrade the Highway 401/407 interchange, which will serve as the highway’s western starting point. Once complete, Highway 413 will run from this interchange near Mississauga, Milton, and Halton Hills through to Highway 400 in Vaughan, with additional connections to Highways 410 and 427.

Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria emphasized the economic and practical benefits:

“Gridlock costs Ontario tens of billions of dollars each year. Highway 413 will relieve one of the busiest corridors in North America and support the province’s long-term growth.”

The provincial government has committed nearly $30 billion over the next decade for building and expanding roads, highways, and bridges. Along with Highway 413, this includes major initiatives such as the Bradford Bypass and the expansion of the Garden City Skyway. To further speed up progress, legislation passed last year—the Reducing Gridlock, Saving You Time Act—is aimed at accelerating the delivery of Highway 413.

In Conclusion, the start of Highway 413 construction is more than just a road project—it’s about saving time, boosting the economy, and building for the future. Whether it’s a quicker trip home, more job opportunities, or stronger connections between communities, Ontarians will soon begin to see the difference. This highway is a long-term investment in keeping Ontario moving.
